Preface

The exceptional dynamism of biochemistry's development has necessitated a thorough revision of the third edition of this textbook, published a few years ago. This is reflected not only in updating the educational material to reflect the Current state of biochemical knowledge, but also in restructuring the approach to and balance between individual sections, including the Introduction of elements of molecular biology and biotechnology that most vividly reveal the practical potential of modern biological chemistry.

When selecting material for the fourth edition of the textbook, consideration was given, as before, to Structure/19.html">The Importance of specific areas of biochemistry in building a clear understanding of general biochemistry, as well as to the uneven pace of development across different Branches of the field. In recent times, massive breakthroughs have been made in studying the structure and METABOLISM of certain groups of Organic compounds. Consequently, the book places significant emphasis on The structure of Proteins, Nucleic Acids, and Enzymes, examines the unique properties of protein structures as carriers of life, highlights THE PRINCIPLE OF complementarity in nucleic acid structure and its role in the template Biosynthesis of natural polymers, and outlines MODERN CONCEPTS OF Biological Oxidation, Metabolic Regulation, and the interplay between various classes of compounds. Where appropriate, the book highlights the Practical Applications OF biochemical advances in shaping New directions in the biological sciences (chemical systematics, Molecular Foundations of Heredity, variation, and evolution, etc.), medicine (Genetic Disorders, biochemical Diagnostics, Chemotherapy strategies, virus-host Cell interactions, etc.), agriculture (biochemical cataloging of genetic pools, ecological biochemistry, cellular engineering, etc.), and industrial manufacturing (enzyme engineering, industrial biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, microbiological synthesis, etc.).

The aforementioned topics—including those addressing the philosophical, social, and ethical dimensions of contemporary biochemistry (The Nature of life, Future Prospects of Genetic Engineering, the relationship between physical, chemical, and biological forms of motion of matter, etc.)—provide future educators with the necessary training to teach not only organic chemistry and general biology in secondary schools, but also to successfully tackle the full range of tasks associated with implementing educational reforms and modernizing higher pedagogical education. A strong focus on fostering independent student work is supported by extensive supplementary reading lists provided at the end of the textbook. Furthermore, coinciding with the release of the textbook, the "Prometheus" publishing house is releasing a methodological guide titled "Comprehensive Review Questions for Student Self-Assessment in Biochemistry Courses," which encapsulates years of experience teaching biochemistry at the Moscow Pedagogical State University. This methodology integrates a modular approach to coursework, a rating-based grading system, and examinations conducted in the form of student presentations, for which recommended topics and reading Materials are also included in the guide.

Given that when outlining the fundamentals of such a rapidly evolving science as biochemistry, varying interpretations of certain problems and minor inaccuracies are inevitable, the author will gladly welcome any advice, suggestions, and feedback regarding the content of this book.
