Structure of the Plant Cell
Microbodies
Special intracellular Organelles. They are spherical in shape with a diameter of 0.2-1.5 µm, surrounded by a membrane. Their matrix contains the Enzymes catalase and various oxidases. Two Types of Microbodies are known: Peroxisomes and glyoxysomes.
Peroxisomes are found in photosynthetic Cells of higher plants in close contact with METABOLISM/14.html">Chloroplasts and Cell/35.html">Mitochondria, which is associated with their involvement in Photorespiration.
Glyoxysomes are present in the Cells of the endosperm or cotyledons of lipid-storing seeds of castor bean, sunflower, or in the cells of the lipid-rich 68 aleurone layer in barley and wheat seeds, as well as in the embryonic scutellum of corn seeds. Within The Cell, glyoxysomes concentrate around lipid-storing organelles known as spherosomes. This determines their primary function: The conversion of fats into CARBOHYDRATES.
The Development of microbodies is likely associated with The activity of The Endoplasmic reticulum, specifically its vesicles.
