FOREWORD

At The current stage of higher education development, medical botany is emerging as a discipline aligned with Modern achievements in science and practice. The range of issues addressed through the close collaboration of biologists, physicians, and pharmacists is exceptionally broad. Medical botany is also multifaceted, particularly in its applied aspects, appealing to specialists across a wide array of fields and professional spheres.

Medical botany is a foundational biomedical discipline in higher pharmaceutical educational institutions. It prepares future masters of pharmacy and pharmacists to formulate and solve specific theoretical and practical tasks related to the utilization of plants and plant resources. The knowledge and practical skills grounded in medical botany are further developed in specialized disciplines and courses dealing with the search for sources of BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES, their Biosynthesis, isolation, properties, drug technology, application of herbal remedies, and more.

One of the core disciplines closely related to botany is pharmacognosy, which focuses on the rational and integrated use of natural resources, the creation and quality control of medicinal products derived from plant raw Materials, and the enhancement of their efficacy. Mastery of fundamental botanical knowledge, botanical terminology, and nomenclature is required for many syllabus topics in other specialized disciplines, such as «Medicinal Plant Resource Management», «Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy», «Pharmacy Technology», «Industrial Drug Technology», «Technology of Biologically Active Substances», «Technology of Extemporaneous Cosmetic Products», «Technology of Perfumery and Cosmetic Products», «Perfumery and Cosmetics», «Aromology», «Biopharmaceutics», «Fundamentals of Practical Cosmetology», «Medical Chemistry», «Pharmacotherapy», «Clinical Pharmacy», and others.

Among the areas of primary student specialization, the course also underpins subjects requiring fundamental knowledge of plant Cytology, Histology, Taxonomy, and ecology, specifically: «Pharmacognosy with the Basics of Phytocosmetics», «Discovery and Development of Medicines», «PLANT Cell AND Tissue Culture», «Medicinal Plants in Homeopathy», «Basic principles of Herbal Medicine», and others.

Until now, there has been a lack of a comprehensive textbook on medical botany. However, over the course of several years, illustrated lecture notes by Professor N.M. Tkachenko and Associate Professor L.M. Serova have been successfully tested in pharmaceutical higher education institutions in Ukraine and abroad. This textbook publication has been developed on their basis. Key highlights reflected in the Structure and content of the textbook include:

✵ shaping an understanding of the modern plant kingdom System and Its developmental trends, The Role of plants in nature, and their significance for humanity;

✵ outlining the general Structural and functional patterns of plant Cells, Tissues, and Organs, and developing The ability to identify diagnostic taxonomic FEATURES OF PLANT objects;

✵ covering the main Methods and techniques of macro- and microscopic analysis of plants and plant raw materials;

✵ exploring the Prospects and pathways of exploration, targeted searching, rational use, conservation, and reproduction of plants as producers of Primary and secondary metabolites.

The textbook complies with the current curriculum and syllabus and incorporates the latest data. It presents the discipline in a compact, visual, and professionally oriented manner across the main sections of botany: anatomy, Morphology, systematics, fundamentals of ecology, phytocenology, and phytogeography, while also incorporating Elements of Plant physiology. Visual clarity is provided by the author's sketches and layout illustrations showing the external appearance of plants and diagnostic features of their organs. Comprehension of extensive botanical terminology is facilitated by a translated glossary. Self-Assessment Questions are provided at the end of each section.

In the «Anatomy» section, primary focus is given to ergastic substances, morphological descriptions of tissues, and histochemistry, which are of diagnostic importance for the microscopic identification of plant objects. The CHARACTERISTICS OF THE Water/140.html">Anatomical Structure of vegetative organs across potential life forms and ecological-taxonomic plant groups are detailed, highlighting their General and Specific distinguishing features as well as species-specific traits using medicinal plants as Examples.

Medicinal and food plants that are widespread in nature or cultivated are also utilized as examples to illustrate the Morphological diversity of vegetative and Generative organs.

In the «Systematics» section, adequate attention is given to the characteristics of families and species of medicinal plants distributed in temperate and subtropical zones. This helps establish an initial database concerning the nomenclature, biology, significance, and application of medicinal plants.

The «Ecology, Phytocenology, Phytogeography» section covers the distribution ranges of subtropical medicinal and food plants, as well as the challenges of conservation, rational use, and replenishment of global vegetation.
