PLANT ANATOMY - Yu.I. Korniievskyi - 2017

Lecture Notes

INTRODUCTION

Pharmaceutical botany is a fundamental biomedical discipline taught in medical and pharmaceutical higher education institutions, closely linked to chemistry, biology, pharmacognosy, microbiology, phytotherapy, herbal drug technology, cosmetology, and other fields. It builds a foundation of knowledge and practical skills that are applied and expanded when searching for sources of natural BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES, studying their Biosynthesis, extraction, structural and property characterization, manufacturing herbal medicines, and exploring their Applications.

The lectures combine traditional elements of botany taught in domestic universities with the latest insights into the Structure, chemical composition, natural resources, and medical use of plants. The course consists of two modules.

Module 1 focuses on the structural, functional, and biochemical FEATURES OF PLANT Cells, Tissues, and Organs. Grounded in modern Methods and original research, it covers the basics of plant cyto- and Histology, the Morphology of vegetative and Generative organs, and the various types and modes of plant reproduction. Special attention is paid to general, taxonomic, as well as MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC diagnostic features of cells, tissues, and organs in medicinal plants. Information is provided on morphological changes associated with age and environmental factors, which can serve as indicators of the quality of plant raw Materials. The standards of the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine regarding the macro- and microscopic analysis of medicinal plant materials are fully incorporated. The material is presented and illustrated using medicinal plant Examples to ensure optimal comprehension, seamless integration into professionally oriented subjects, and Practical Application by specialists.

This study guide includes lectures on the following topics: «Plant Cell», «Plant Tissues», «Water/125.html">MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY of Axial Organs (ROOT, SHOOT, Stem, Leaf, Rhizome)»; along with reference tables and a bibliography.
