The ability of Cells to maintain a high degree of Organization is closely related to Genetic information.

Genes are hereditary factors representing a specific sequence of NUCLEOTIDES in a DNA molecule, which store information about the Structure and properties of each Cell and the Organism as a whole. The carriers of hereditary information are Chromosomes, which consist of DNA molecules.

For a long time, scientists believed that the transmission of genetic information was carried out by Proteins, as these were the only substances possessing structural diversity. Numerous studies on Bacteria and Viruses proved this theory untenable.

Discovered by James Watson and Francis Crick, The Double Helix of the DNA molecule attracted intense scientific attention. Hypotheses were put forward suggesting that the two DNA strands are capable of unwinding and serving as a template for the synthesis of new molecules. The Watson-Crick model helped formulate the General Principles governing the transmission of genetic information from Cell to Cell and from organism to organism.
