Proteins are essential components of all Cells, which makes METABOLISM/35.html">Protein Biosynthesis the most crucial process of plastic metabolism. It takes place in all living cells. Proteins are the only cellular components (aside from Nucleic Acids) whose synthesis is directly controlled by The Cell's genetic material. The entire GENETIC APPARATUS OF the cell—DNA and various types of RNA—is geared toward Protein Synthesis.
A Gene is a segment of a DNA molecule responsible for the synthesis of a single protein molecule. Protein synthesis requires a specific gene from DNA to be copied into a Messenger RNA molecule, a process discussed previously. Protein synthesis is a complex, multi-stage process that relies on The activity of various types of RNA. The direct Biosynthesis of Proteins requires the following components:
1. Messenger RNA (mRNA) — carries Genetic information from DNA to the site of synthesis. mRNA molecules are synthesized during Transcription.
2. Ribosomes — cellular Organelles where protein synthesis takes place.
3. A pool of required Amino Acids in the Cytoplasm.
4. Transfer RNA (tRNA) — molecules that recognize amino acid codes and transport them to the ribosomes for protein synthesis.
