Solitary hormone-producing Cells (the Cytology/cytology/65.html">Diffuse Endocrine System) are cells or groups of cells, diverse in origin and Structure, that produce BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES with hormonal effects. The diffuse endocrine system includes endocrinocytes in the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, parafollicular cells of The Thyroid Gland, and secretory cells in certain other human body Organs. The Hormones produced by the Cells of the diffuse endocrine system exert a local effect on adjacent, neighboring cells (Tissues) and influence the general Functions of the body.
