Special Part
Urinary System, systema urinarium - General Overview
Urinary Organs - Ureter - X-ray Anatomy of the Ureter
When filled with a contrast agent during excretory infusion urography, the Ureter is clearly visualized as a long, narrow shadow extending from the Kidney to the Urinary Bladder (see Fig. 306).
The Blood supply to the ureter comes from multiple sources: Branches of the renal artery (a. renalis) and branches of the testicular artery (a. testicularis or a. ovarica) at the crossing points; ureteric branches (rr. ureterici) from the aorta, common iliac artery (a. iliaca communis), and internal iliac artery (a. iliaca interna) supplying the middle portion; and the lower (pelvic) part, which is supplied by branches of the middle rectal and inferior vesical Arteries. Venous blood from the ureter drains into the testicular (ovarian) or internal iliac vein.
Lymphatic vessels provide Lymph drainage to the lumbar and internal iliac Lymph Nodes.
The Innervation of the ureter is provided by the autonomic nerve plexuses of the Abdominal cavity AND pelvis. Sympathetic innervation is supplied by the pl. renalis, pl. uretericus, and pl. hypogastricus inferior. Parasympathetic innervation is mediated by axons of Cells from parasympathetic ganglia, where branches of the Vagus nerve ($n. vagus$) and pelvic splanchnic nerves ($nervi pelvici splanchnici$) synapse. Sensory fibers reach the ureter as part of both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves.
