Innervation of the Organ of Vision

Sensory innervation of the Eyeball is supplied by the ophthalmic nerve (the first branch of the Trigeminal nerve).

Parasympathetic innervation to the sphincter pupillae and ciliary Muscle is provided by fibers from the Oculomotor nerve.

Sympathetic innervation to the dilator pupillae muscle is supplied by fibers from the internal carotid plexus.

Motor innervation to the Muscles of the eyeball is derived from the Branches of the III, IV, and VI pairs of Cranial Nerves. The extraocular recti muscles (except for the lateral rectus) and the inferior oblique muscle are innervated by the oculomotor nerve (cranial nerve III), the superior oblique muscle by the Trochlear nerve (cranial nerve IV), and the lateral rectus muscle by the Abducens nerve (cranial nerve VI).
