Fundamental Tissues
Assimilation Parenchyma (Chlorophyll-bearing Parenchyma or Chlorenchyma)
It consists of living, thin-walled Cells whose Cytoplasm contains METABOLISM/14.html">Chloroplasts. Based on Cell shape, this parenchyma is subdivided into palisade, spongy, and folded types.
Palisade parenchyma cells are elongated, spongy cells are spherical, while in folded parenchyma, The Cell walls form inward-projecting folds. Chlorenchyma occurs in leaves, the cortical region of stems, flowers, fruits, and aerial roots. The primary function of chlorenchyma is Photosynthesis.
The type of chlorenchyma, or the ratio between its different types within the leaf mesophyll, serves as an important diagnostic feature in the microscopic analysis of Medicinal plant raw Materials (e.g., leaves of eucalyptus, lily of the valley, two-leaf false lily of the valley, etc.).
