Regulation of Cellular Functions
There are several levels at which the Regulation of cellular Functions is carried out.
1. Regulation through changes in The properties of the cytoplasmic membrane, i.e., the rate at which metabolites enter The Cell via membrane transport systems, which not only maintain the constancy of the intracellular environment but also participate in the Transport of substances across the membranes of intracellular Organelles.
2. Regulation of Metabolic processes by the Cell Nucleus.
3. Metabolic Regulation of the cell's enzyme systems.
4. Humoral and Neural Control of cellular functions.
Information regarding the metabolic state of "consumer" Cells is delivered by primary chemical "messengers": Hormones, Neurotransmitters, mediators, R-factors, Prostaglandins, and others, and reaches "target" cells. Here, the signal of the first information "messenger" is transduced via a specific receptor within the target cell, inducing a conformational change in the receptor and activating intracellular or membrane-bound Enzymes. This alters the Synthesis of Secondary messengers (cAMP, cGMP), ultimately modifying cellular activity (such as the opening or closing of Ion Channels, methylation, phosphorylation, increased DNA Synthesis, etc.)
