Biomedical Significance
Heme-containing Proteins are involved in oxygen binding and transport, electron transport, and Photosynthesis. Detailed studies of Hemoglobin and Myoglobin reveal A number of structural aspects common to many proteins. Emphasizing the great Biomedical Significance of these proteins, we note that the results obtained from their research clearly illustrate Structure-function relationships. Furthermore, these studies uncover the Molecular Basis of various Genetic Disorders, such as Sickle Cell anemia (caused by altered Surface Properties of the hemoglobin ß-subunit) or thalassemia (a chronic inherited hemolytic disease characterized by impaired hemoglobin synthesis). The lethal effect of cyanide and carbon monoxide is due to their ability to block the physiological function of Hemoproteins—specifically, cytochrome c oxidase and hemoglobin. Finally, the stabilization of The quaternary structure of deoxyhemoglobin by 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG) plays a central role in understanding the mechanisms of Hypoxia at high altitudes and the processes of adaptation to these conditions.
