Technology for Microbial Lipid Production
Microbial Lipids find Applications across various industries, including the paint and varnish, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as in medicine. Yeasts are the primary lipid producers. For instance, the lipid content in Cells of the Yeast Cryptococcus terricolus reaches 60% of their dry weight. Yeasts of the species Lipomyces lipoferus and Rhodotorula gracilis accumulate up to 70% triacylglycerols. Significant amounts of Phospholipids are synthesized by the alkane-utilizing yeast Cryptococcus guilliermondii.
Peat and wood hydrolysates are used as carbohydrate sources for the growth of lipid-producing microorganisms. A high nitrogen concentration in the nutrient medium inhibits Lipid Biosynthesis while enhancing Protein Synthesis, whereas nitrogen limitation stimulates lipid accumulation.
Simple Lipids (glycerides and Waxes) of microbial origin are utilized as technological lubricants in metalworking processes. Higher Fatty acids containing 14 to 18 carbon atoms are employed in the manufacture of soaps and tires, as well as in the chemical and coatings industries. Phospholipids are used as additives in mineral flotation and as anti-corrosion components in lubricants.
