Dear Reader,

Odessa State Medical University continues the publication of a new series of educational literature: the "Medical Student's Library".

As we build an independent Ukraine and care for its future, we must strive to preserve and enrich our historical, cultural, and scientific heritage for generations to come. A good book is the best tool for this purpose. However, there are several other reasons that inspired us to undertake this work.

First, there is an insufficient quantity and quality of modern textbooks published in the national language. Therefore, our goal was to create a series of textbooks and study guides that combine classical knowledge across various medical fields with the latest advancements and the extensive expertise of our leading specialists.

Second, in accordance with updated curricula and standard syllabi, a wide range of new disciplines and courses has recently been introduced, for which no textbooks previously existed.

Third, we believe that Odessa State Medical University, which celebrated its centenary in 2000, is ideally positioned to launch a series of original textbooks and educational manuals. After all, it serves as the core around which numerous medical schools and academic directions have formed, led by prominent physicians whose authority is widely recognized not only in Ukraine but in many countries worldwide.

We hope that this series will make a significant contribution to the advancement of medicine and the training of medical professionals.

Conducting Practical Classes in Histology, Cytology, and Embryology at medical universities plays a vital role in the fundamental and theoretical training of future physicians. Accordingly, practical classes should not merely illustrate theoretical concepts and facilitate their comprehension and assimilation; they must also teach students to accurately identify histological specimens, thereby understanding the Structural Organization of Tissues and Organs. Furthermore, a primary objective of practical histology classes is to train students in performing histological analyses of studied specimens, distinguishing between Primary and secondary Structural Features of tissues and organs, and correctly correlating Structure with function. This practical guide for the course in Special Histology and embryology is designed to structure student work during Practical Sessions and in the histological laboratory.

Each topic begins with a Brief Overview of the theoretical material, followed by a Description of the specimen under study, along with its illustration and electron micrograph. These are followed by control questions, situational case studies, and sample exam questions. This workbook is neither a comprehensive textbook on histology nor a methodological manual outlining the step-by-step Procedures and techniques for conducting practical classes. Rather, it is a study guide intended to prepare students theoretically for working with specimens both during classes and in independent study.

Unlike previously published methodological recommendations and practical guides in histology, this workbook attempts to bridge the gap between theoretical foundations and practical work. In addition, it contains descriptions and illustrations of all specimens used in practical classes as well as in the state transition examinations. All drawings were rendered directly from the permanent slides available at the Department of Histology, Embryology, and Cytology of Odessa State Medical University.

This practical guide has been compiled in accordance with the curriculum for histology, embryology, and cytology (1992) for medical universities in Ukraine and can be used as a textbook for instructors and students of medical and dental faculties.
