Preface

The quality of nursing education depends not only on teaching excellence and the technical resources of the classroom, but also on the availability of modern textbooks and study guides.

The study guide "Anatomy and Physiology" has been developed in accordance with the curriculum approved by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

The professional development of a future nurse begins with the foundational disciplines studied at the very outset of their training, one of which is human anatomy and physiology.

The material in this study guide is structured in a traditional format for anatomy and physiology. It consists of 12 sections, each beginning with anatomical data followed by the physiological Functions of the respective organ or system. Additionally, the Main Milestones in the History of Anatomy and physiology are briefly outlined. Self-Assessment Questions are provided at the end of each section.

Organ and tissue terminology is based on standard Latin anatomical terms from the International Anatomical Nomenclature, approved at the London Anatomical Congress in 1985. Quantitative physiological parameters are presented in accordance with the International System of Units (SI).

The guide includes illustrations and diagrams. Some of the illustrations have been adapted from various publications, including "Human Anatomy" in 2 vols., edited by M. R. Sapin (Moscow, 1993), "Human Physiology", edited by R. Schmidt and G. Thews (Moscow, 1985–1986), "General Course of Human and Animal Physiology" in 2 vols., edited by A. D. Nozdrachev (Moscow, 1991), H. Feneis's "Pocket Atlas of Human Anatomy Based on the International Nomenclature" (Minsk, 1996), and other textbooks. Some illustrations have been modified or updated.
