3.2. PRIMARY Bone tumors

Benign primary bone tumors. This group includes chondroma and osteoma.

A chondroma is a tumor originating from hyaline Cartilage, growing as a dense single or multinodular mass in the JOINTS OF THE hand, FOOT, spine, and pelvis.

An osteoma most frequently develops in the Skull bones. Histologically, it consists of haphazardly arranged bone trabeculae separated by proliferating Connective Tissue. The characteristic feature of an osteoma is that it destroys the bone locally without producing metastases.

Malignant primary bone tumors. This group includes bone and cartilage sarcomas.

Osteosarcoma develops in the bones, often following trauma. The tumor rapidly destroys Bone tissue and produces widespread hematogenous metastases, particularly to The Liver and Lungs.

Chondrosarcoma consists of atypical cartilage Cells, and its tissue frequently undergoes myxoid degeneration and necrosis. This tumor grows relatively slowly and metastasizes later than other sarcomas.
