The slide shows a vertical section of the cerebellar cortex gyri. A narrow dark band, the pia mater (1), is visible On the surface. Beneath it lies the molecular layer (2), where the nuclei of glial Cells and basket cells can be distinguished. Deeper lies the Purkinje Cell layer (ganglionic layer) (3). Here we observe large pyriform (pear-shaped) cell bodies of Purkinje cells, whose processes extend into the molecular layer. Surrounding the Purkinje cells, the axon collaterals of basket cells form dense plexuses. Purkinje cells are arranged in a single row parallel to The surface of the cerebellar gyrus. The third and deepest layer, the granular layer (4), contains A large number of densely packed nuclei of granule cells and stellate Neurons, with nerve fibers visible between them in some areas. Some of the fibers run toward the ganglionic layer and wind around the dendrites of Purkinje cells like climbing vines, which is why they are called climbing fibers.
