The slide is a transverse section of the Spinal Cord. To the naked eye, without a Microscope, the grey matter (1) is visible in the center shaped like a butterfly or the letter "H", surrounded by the White matter (2) along the periphery. The symmetrical halves of the spinal cord are separated ventrally by the median fissure (3) and dorsally by the median sulcus (4). Both halves are connected by the grey commissure and the ventral white commissure. In the middle lies a rounded aperture—the central canal of the spinal cord (5).
The grey matter contains narrow dorsal (posterior) horns (6) and broad ventral (anterior) horns (7). Between them, the grey matter forms lateral projections known as lateral horns (8).
Under low magnification, numerous multipolar Neurons of various sizes can be observed in the grey matter. In the posterior and lateral horns, these are small and medium-sized internal (intercalated) and tract multipolar neurons; in the anterior horns, they are predominantly large radicular neurons measuring 100-140 µm.
