Ground Tissues

Water-Storage Parenchyma

It is composed of living, thin-walled Cells that are highly vacuolated and filled with a watery Cell sap. This tissue is characteristic of plants from arid habitats, known as succulents. In leaf succulents (such as stonecrop, purslane, echeveria, and aloe), the Water-storage parenchyma is located in the leaves beneath the epidermis, whereas in stem succulents (such as cacti and euphorbias), it is found in the stem Tissues. Water-rich storage tissues are also well-developed in tubers, ROOT crops, and the succulent scales of bulbs.

Ground tissue comprises less specialized cells that combine storage, conducting, and metabolic Functions. These include the parenchyma of the cortex, central cylinder, and root rays, as well as the primary cortex and central cylinder of the stem (pith, pith rays, interfascicular parenchyma, phloem and xylem parenchyma, etc.). The parenchyma Cells of the primary cortex (subepidermal cells), the central cylinder of the stem (interfascicular parenchyma), and the root (phloem parenchyma) can regain The ability to divide and give rise to meristematic tissues (phellogen, cambium).
