Introduction
Intermediary METABOLISM processes encompass the transformations of dietary components following their Digestion AND ABSORPTION. Intermediary metabolism not only describes the Metabolic pathways of individual molecule transformations, but also demonstrates the interconnections among Various metabolic pathways; investigating intermediary metabolism involves elucidating The regulatory mechanisms governing metabolite fluxes through different pathways. Metabolic pathways are divided into three categories (Fig. 16.1).
1. Anabolic pathways involve synthesis processes for components of various body structures and compounds that ensure its functioning. One such pathway is Protein Synthesis. The Free energy required for these processes is supplied by the operation of metabolic pathways that form the next category.
2. Catabolic pathways involve oxidative processes that supply Free Energy and store it in the form of high-energy phosphates or reducing equivalents; Examples include the Cell/36.html">Respiratory Chain and Oxidative Phosphorylation.
3. Amphibolic pathways perform multiple Functions simultaneously, serving as metabolic "crossroads" that connect anabolic and catabolic pathways; The Citric Acid Cycle is a prime example.
