LECTURE 9. PHYLUM NEMATHELMINTHES, OR ROUNDWORMS (Nemathelmintes)

Important to know that

- Humans can contract Ascaris infection in various ways, particularly through unwashed vegetables and fruits, and dirty hands. In addition, Ascaris eggs are carried by flies and cockroaches and can settle on food along with dust. Children may become infected while playing in sand or soil contaminated with parasite eggs. Other causes include using unsterilized human waste as soil fertilizer, dumping sewage into Water bodies, and a low level of public hygiene.

- The risk of Ascaris infection in temperate climates peaks during spring and early summer.

- In many cases, an accumulation of Roundworms causes intestinal obstruction. Saving the patient's life then requires emergency surgery—an incision into the Abdominal cavity AND intestine to remove the tangled mass of ascarids.

- Humans contract trichinosis by eating undercooked or poorly fried pork containing the encysted larvae of this parasite.

Trichinosis causes a severe human disease characterized by high fever, and Swelling of the face and legs. This condition is often fatal, as hundreds of thousands of trichinae that have invaded the Muscles of the arms, legs, Heart, Stomach, and other Organs cannot be removed by any medication.

- Populations that do not consume pork do not contract trichinosis.

FROM THE HISTORY of Science

- It was only in the 1860s that outdated myths about the "spontaneous generation" of parasites were finally dispelled, and the fight against helminthiases gained a genuine scientific foundation. This period marked the dawn of a new science: helminthology.

For a long time, efforts against parasitic worm infections focused primarily on Prevention. Key measures included establishing water supply and sewage systems in urban and rural areas, organizing sanitary inspection of food products, eliminating environmental contamination by human waste, exterminating rodents and flies as disease vectors, raising public health awareness, and improving living conditions. However, the biology of many parasites—the sole foundation for rational control—was not always well understood. This drove further research by helminthologists. For instance, in the 1920s, The life cycle of the well-known human roundworm (*Ascaris lumbricoides*) was finally mapped out. Yet, many "blank spots" remained in helminthology. Notably, even among specialists, the misconception persisted that pinworms could reproduce and develop entirely within the human intestine.

Today, helminthologists study a vast array of parasitic worm species, having discovered several hundred previously unknown to science and established their link to Human and Animal diseases. Researchers have identified endemic foci of helminthic infections and, in many cases, unraveled highly complex relationships where different organisms act as hosts and carriers for the same parasite. Ultimately, thorough studies of helminth biology have enabled the development and Structure/175.html">Implementation of sanitary measures aimed at preventing the emergence and spread of helminthiases.

Today, personal responsibility plays an increasingly vital role in maintaining health and preventing numerous diseases caused by invertebrates and their vectors. Practicing personal hygiene as an integral part of a modern, healthy lifestyle remains the most effective defense against these infections.

- A monumental contribution to helminthology was made by the prominent Russian and Soviet scientist K.I. Skrjabin (1878–1972) (Fig. 29). He proposed and elaborated THE PRINCIPLE OF *devastation* (from Latin *devastatio* — to lay waste, devastate), which involves eradicating parasitic worms at all stages of their life cycle using every available mechanical, chemical, and biological control method.

The Evolutionary Process

- The phylum Nemathelmintes traces its origins back to turbellarian-like ancestors. Certain classes of roundworms retain features shared with Flatworms: gastrotrichs and rotifers (which externally resemble planarians) still possess patches of ciliated epithelium and protonephridia.

- Paradoxically, all members of the phylum Nemathelmintes share a worm-like body shape. This shape simply proved universally successful for survival across diverse ecological niches (water, soil, and the Tissues of animals and plants)—environments that all share one common feature: an Abundance of organic matter.
