CHAPTER 5. INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of Industrial Bioprocesses
The following MAIN TYPES OF industrial bioprocesses are distinguished:
- biomass production (Single-Cell Protein);
- production of cellular components (Enzymes, Nucleic Acids, Lipids);
- production of primary metabolites (ethanol, lactic and acetic acids);
- production of secondary metabolites (Antibiotics, Hormones, Alkaloids, toxins);
- single-substrate conversions (Production of acetic acid from ethanol, gluconic acid from glucose, conversion of glucose to fructose);
- multi-substrate conversions (wastewater Treatment, disposal of lignocellulosic wastes).
