Gene Expression in Eukaryotes
Unlike prokaryotes, eukaryotic mRNA is synthesized during METABOLISM/31.html">Transcription within the Cell Nucleus and subsequently transported to the Cytoplasm. Consequently, Protein Synthesis occurring in the cytoplasm and transcription are distinct stages of Gene Expression separated in both space and time. Another fundamental difference lies in the mosaic Structure OF THE eukaryotic gene (see Chapter 1): the primary transcript produced cannot serve directly as a template for protein synthesis—at least because it contains introns. The maturation of pre-mRNA to yield a functional template is termed Processing. All processing events take place co-transcriptionally on the RNA polymerase complex; in other words, eukaryotic mRNA Processing is an integral part of transcription.
