The Testes consist of loops of convoluted seminiferous tubules, in the walls of which spermatozoa are formed from primordial Germ Cells (Spermatogenesis). Both ends of each loop connect to a network of ducts within the HEAD of the Epididymis. From there, spermatozoa pass through the tail of the epididymis into the Ductus deferens. During ejaculation, they travel through the ejaculatory ducts into the Urethra within the Prostate Gland (Fig. 23-15). Between the seminiferous tubules lie groups of cells containing lipid granules—the interstitial cells of Leydig (Figs. 23-16, 23-17)—which secrete testosterone into the bloodstream. The testicular Arteries are convoluted, and Blood flows through them parallel to, but in the opposite direction of, the BLOOD FLOW IN the pampiniform plexus of testicular Veins. This anatomical feature helps maintain a constant Temperature and testosterone secretion. The principles of this exchange mechanism regarding the Kidneys are discussed in detail in Chapter 38.
