Primary Granular Contracted Kidney

The kidney is reduced in size, with a finely granular surface and firm consistency. Such renal changes develop in Hypertension, when hyalinosis and sclerosis occur in the renal arterioles and glomeruli, impairing the Blood supply to the renal parenchyma and causing sclerotic alterations within it. Macroscopically, this appears as depressions on the kidney surface interspersed with adjacent protrusions, which result from compensatory hypertrophic processes in the preserved glomeruli.
