Regions of the Back

The following dorsal regions are distinguished:

The vertebral region (regio vertebralis) is unpaired and corresponds to the contours of THE Vertebral Column.

The sacral region (regio sacralis) is unpaired and corresponds to the contours of the sacrum. The scapular region (regio scapularis) is paired and bounded by the margins of the scapula. The infrascapular region (regio infrascapularis) is paired, bounded superiorly by a horizontal line drawn through the inferior angle of the scapula, inferiorly by the 12th rib, medially by a vertical line drawn through the superior angle of the scapula, and laterally by the midaxillary line.

The lumbar region (regio lumbalis) is paired, bounded superiorly by the 12th rib and inferiorly by the iliac crest.

The lumbar triangle (trigonum lumbare) is paired and located within the lumbar region. It is bounded inferiorly by the iliac crest, medially by the lateral margin of the latissimus dorsi Muscle, and laterally by the posterior margin of the external oblique muscle of the abdomen.
