Bulbourethral gland
The bulbourethral gland (Cowper's gland) (glandula bulbourethralis) is a paired organ located posterior to the membranous part of the male Urethra, within the thickness of the deep transverse perineal Muscle (Fig. 169). The right and left glands are situated about 0.6 cm apart from each other. The glands produce a viscous mucous secretion that protects the urethral mucosa from the irritant action of urine.
The Bulbourethral Glands are spherical in shape, with a firm consistency, a yellowish-brown color, and a somewhat nodular surface. The diameter of the gland ranges from 3 to 8 mm. In Structure, the bulbourethral gland is tubuloalveolar. The thin excretory duct of the bulbourethral gland (ductus glandulae bulbourethralis), 3–4 cm in length, pierces the bulb of the Penis and opens into the spongy part of the urethra. Sometimes the ducts of both glands open via a common orifice.
The bulbourethral gland receives its Blood supply from Branches of the internal pudendal artery. Venous drainage flows into the Veins OF THE bulb of the penis and the urogenital Diaphragm. Lymphatic vessels drain into the internal iliac Lymph Nodes.
The bulbourethral gland is innervated by branches of the pudendal nerve (sensory innervation), the prostatic plexus (sympathetic innervation), and the pelvic splanchnic nerves (parasympathetic innervation).
