The Prostate Gland is a glandular-muscular organ. It consists of 40–50 tubuloalveolar glands that form the glandular substance, substantia glandularis. The glands give rise to prostatic ducts, ductuli prostatici, which open into the prostatic Urethra. Between and around the glands, within Connective Tissue septa, run bundles of smooth Muscle fibers that collectively form the muscular substance, substantia muscularis. These bundles of muscle fibers encircle the urethra and form its involuntary sphincter, m. sphincter urethrae internus. Contraction of the muscular tissue of the gland facilitates the expulsion of its secretion.
The prostate gland is an androgen-dependent organ and is considered a unique biochemical laboratory of the male body. Its secretion contains structural and enzymatic Proteins; it produces fibrinolysin and fibrogenase—Proteolytic Enzymes that liquefy the ejaculate. The secretion also contains citric acid, Prostaglandins, spermine, and spermidine. Furthermore, prostatic fluid contains acid and alkaline Phosphatases, lipoid bodies (lecithin), Trace Elements, and Hormones. The secretion of the prostate gland accounts for 30% of the semen volume.
Blood supply to the gland is provided by the inferior vesical and middle rectal Arteries. Venous drainage is carried out through the prostatic plexus into the inferior vesical Veins.
Lymphatic drainage flows into the internal iliac Lymph Nodes.
Innervation is provided by the prostatic nerve plexus, plexus prostaticus.
