8.2. OLFACTORY Brain

The olfactory brain in humans is represented by rudimentary structures that constitute the oldest areas of the Cerebral Cortex. They are well-developed in animals. The olfactory brain is divided into peripheral and central parts. The peripheral part includes the olfactory bulb, olfactory tract, olfactory trigone, and anterior perforated substance; the central part comprises the cingulate gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, dentate gyrus, and uncus. All these structures are Components of the limbic system, which, along with the entire subcortex, serves as an energy source for the cortex, governs vital human responses, and regulates The activity of Internal Organs. This system is often referred to as the "visceral brain" because it receives sensory input from internal organs. The limbic system regulates sensations of hunger and thirst, perception of sounds and smells, and houses the Mechanisms of Memory.
