Lichens

Growing on rocks and in other dry habitats (often in cold climates), there are over 15,000 varieties of lichens. Lichens represent a symbiotic association between a fungus and a true alga or a prokaryotic blue-green alga. While the Algae appear to derive little benefit from this Symbiosis, the Fungi penetrate the algal Cells to obtain nutrients [40]. Although each partner of a lichen can be cultivated separately, their combination gives rise to novel properties. For instance, lichens (but not their individual constituent organisms) produce specialized pigments and Phenolic Compounds known as depsides.
