Siberian phlojodicarpus — Phlojodicarpus sibiricus K.—Pol., family Apiaceae

Siberian phlojodicarpus; the name is derived from the Greek phloidao — to inflate, and karpos — fruit; Latin sibiricus — Siberian, referring to its habitat.

A perennial herbaceous plant, up to 70 cm tall. Its short, vertical, multi-headed rhizome, covered with the remnants of leaf petioles, transitions into a taproot 15-25 (50) cm long. Stems are simple or branched, ribbed. Basal leaves are numerous, glabrous, tri-pinnatisect, and glaucous-green. Leaf blades are ovate, 5-30 cm long and 2-10 cm wide, with linear-lanceolate, acuminate segments. Cauline leaves are few and small, with highly dilated and long sheaths, often colored purple. The inflorescence is a compound umbel. Involucral bracts (5-8 in total) are white-scarious, linear-lanceolate, often reflexed. Petals are white, 1.5-2 cm long. It flowers in June-July. Fruits are broadly ovate cremocarps, 6-8 (10) mm long.

Distribution. It grows on the slopes of steppe hills, in well-lit areas (glades, forest edges) of mountain pine and birch forests of Siberia and Mongolia.

Harvesting. The underground Organs are dug up, cleared of soil and stones, separated from the aerial parts, chopped with an axe into pieces 5-7 cm long, and split longitudinally. They are dried in attics, well-ventilated areas, or under sheds. In sunny weather, they can be dried outdoors. Drying is considered complete when the rhizomes and roots break easily when bent.

Chemical composition of the raw material. The roots contain pyranocoumarins (3 %), the main of which are visnadin and dihydrosamidin.

Biological activity and application. The drug floverin is used for peripheral vascular spasms, spastic forms of endarteritis, Raynaud's disease, and mild forms of chronic coronary insufficiency.
