Sex Hormones
Introduction
The Gonads (sex glands) are bifunctional Organs that produce Germ Cells and Sex Hormones. These two Functions are closely interrelated, as The Development of germ cells requires a high concentration of sex hormones. The Ovaries produce ova and the Steroid Hormones estrogen and progesterone, while the Testes produce spermatozoa and testosterone. Similar to the Adrenal Glands, the gonads produce a considerable amount of Steroids, but only some of them possess hormonal activity. The synthesis of these hormones is strictly regulated via a feedback loop involving the Pituitary Gland and the Hypothalamus. The action of sex hormones is mediated by nuclear mechanisms similar to those utilized by corticosteroids.
