Hormones
Sex hormones are steroids
Like the Hormones of the adrenal cortex, androgens (Male Sex Hormones) and estrogens (Female Sex Hormones) are Steroids. The adrenal cortex, Testes, and Ovaries share a common embryological origin, but this is not their only point of similarity. For instance, androgens are synthesized not only in the testes, but also (albeit in smaller quantities) in the adrenal cortex and ovaries. Similarly, estrogens are produced not only in the ovaries, but also in the adrenal cortex and testes. Essentially, sexual characteristics are determined by The ratio of secreted androgens to estrogens.
