Integration of the Viral Genome into the Cellular Genome

The DNA genome of temperate Viruses can integrate into the cellular genome (Fig. 11.10) and subsequently replicate along with it during Cell Division. The integrated viral genome is referred to as a provirus, or a prophage in the case of phages. Excision of the provirus (prophage) from the cellular genome is also possible. For some temperate viruses, the proviral state is an obligate form of existence, whereas for others, it serves as one of the ways to store and reproduce Genetic information.
