Somatic Cell Hybrids
Hybrid Cells are used to investigate the mechanisms of malignant transformation, the patterns of virus-Cell interactions in animals and humans, and the Regulation of Cell division.
In 1960, G. Barsky made the first attempt at somatic cell Hybridization. Under normal conditions, The formation of hybrid cells is extremely rare; therefore, a somatic cell hybridization technique was developed using inactivated parainfluenza Viruses, such as Sendai virus, which are capable of agglutinating and fusing cells together. Interspecific hybrid cells were successfully obtained, including human-mouse, chicken-human, and mosquito-human hybrids. Furthermore, it proved possible to hybridize cells from different Tissues, such as lymphocytes and fibroblasts, as well as normal and tumor cells.
The method of Human and Animal somatic cell hybridization is used to produce Monoclonal Antibodies (see the chapter "Medical Biotechnology"). The producers of monoclonal antibodies are hybridomas obtained by fusing human lymphocytes with mouse myeloma cells.
