Spongy Kidney

The surface of the kidney is bumpy, retaining remnants of embryonic development features. A cut section reveals that the parenchyma has a spongy appearance with numerous small cavities. Causes: impaired INTRAUTERINE DEVELOPMENT OF the kidney; absence of connections between the glomeruli and tubules. As a result, primary urine accumulates in the glomeruli, compressing them and causing atrophy. This is an example of local congenital pressure atrophy. Consequences: renal failure.
