Splenic hypertrophy (Splenomegaly)

The Spleen is enlarged 3–4 times, dark cherry in color, and firm in consistency. These alterations occur in Blood disorders such as anemias, leukemias, and hemoblastoses. The enlargement of the spleen is a result of compensatory hypertrophic changes. Consequences: its function is enhanced, it becomes a site of hematopoiesis, and sometimes rupture may occur following minor trauma.
