Regions of the Neck

The anterior region of the neck, regio cervicalis anterior [trigonum cervicale anterius], appears as a triangle with its base directed superiorly. This region is bounded superiorly by the Base of the Mandible, inferiorly by the jugular notch of the Sternum, and laterally by the anterior borders of the right and left sternocleidomastoid Muscles. The anterior median line divides this neck region into right and left medial Triangles of the neck.

The sternocleidomastoid region, regio sternocleidomastoidea, extends as a band from the mastoid process (superiorly and posteriorly) to the sternal end of the clavicle (inferiorly and anteriorly).

The lateral region of the neck, regio cervicis lateralis, has the shape of a triangle with its sharpest angle directed superiorly. This region is located between the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid Muscle anteriorly and the lateral border of the trapezius muscle posteriorly, and is bounded inferiorly by the clavicle.

The posterior region of the neck [nuchal region], regio cervicis posterior [reg. nuchalis], is bounded laterally by the lateral borders of the trapezius muscles; superiorly by the superior nuchal line; and inferiorly by a transverse line connecting the right and left acromions and passing through the spinous process of the VII cervical vertebra. The posterior median line divides this region of the neck into right and left parts.
