GENUS GUDGEON (ПІЧКУР) - GOBIO CUVIER

Body elongated, fusiform, covered with relatively large scales. The lateral line (34-46 scales) runs along the midline of the body. The body surface between the pectoral fins and the lower margins of the gill covers ("throat", - isthmus) is naked or scaled. The antedorsal distance is greater than, equal to, or slightly less than the postdorsal distance. Dorsal fin short, with (6) 7-8 (9) branched rays, unspined, originating slightly anterior to the Base of the pelvic fins. Anal fin short, with (5) 6-7 branched rays; its origin is closer to the base of the pelvic fins than to the caudal fin base. HEAD somewhat elongated, low; nostrils on small prominences, paired, each divided by a transverse membrane into two parts. Mouth inferior or terminal. barbels, sometimes very short. The lower lip is thin, interrupted in the middle; the upper lip is thin, continuous. The lower jaw lacks a horny sheath; the premaxillary bone reaches the posterior margin of the Maxilla. The preorbital bone is long or short, reaching the eye Orbit. Gill membranes attached below the posterior margin of the preopercle. Gill rakers short, arranged singly. Pharyngeal Teeth biserial 2.5-5.2, 3.5-5.3, 3.5-4.2, 3.6-5.2, etc., elongated into a distinct hook. Intestinal tract short. Swim bladder not enclosed in a bony capsule.

About 20 species are known in Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia, the Amur basin, China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, Vietnam, and Taiwan. Seven species are distributed in Ukraine.
