Slide 35. Merocrine (eccrine) sweat gland in human finger skin.

To examine the Sweat Glands, use slide 31.

The slide shows the stratified keratinized squamous epithelium of the finger Skin (epidermis). It comprises the following layers: basal (2), spinous (3), granular (4), lucidum (5), cornified, and desquamated (6). Deeper lie the dermis, consisting of the papillary (7) and reticular (8) layers, and the subcutaneous layer (hypodermis). Sweat glands are located in the reticular layer of the dermis. Because they have a coiled tubular Structure, cross-sections of their terminal secretory portions may appear round, oval, or elongated (9). The glandular Cells of the sweat gland terminal portion are clear and dark, cuboidal or columnar in shape, with closely apposed round nuclei. Excretory ducts may appear in the section either as elongated tubes or as round structures in the papillary layer of the dermis and in the epidermis, where they open as sweat pores.

A separate view shows a cross-section of the sweat gland terminal tubule (9) surrounded by myoepithelial cells (11).
