Bark (Rhytidome)

The tertiary dermal tissue of woody stems and roots is called the bark or rhytidome. The bark is a complex of dead cortical Cells formed As a result of repeated initiation of phellogen and cork in deeper layers of the cortex. Consequently, the cortical cells located outward from the newly formed cork die off. The bark grows annually from the inside due to the phellogen, while on the outside it cracks, dies, and sloughs off. The bark provides a much stronger protective layer than the cork.

The specific morphological and Anatomical Features of the cork and bark serve as an important diagnostic criterion for identifying medicinal raw Materials derived from oak and buckthorn bark.
