GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS AND FEATURES

Order Porphyridiales

Unites coccoid (unicellular and colonial) Algae. Asexual reproduction occurs via mono- and tetraspores. A typical representative of the order is Porphyridium purpureum.

The genus Porphyridium (Fig. 14) represents freshwater and soil algae that grow as mucous colonies uniting spherical Cells with a large central stellate chloroplast and a pyrenoid in the center.

Certain species (such as Porphyridium purpureum) are promising phycotechnological objects for industrial cultivation as producers of phycocolloids.
