This class consists exclusively of representatives at the monadoid level of Organization. METABOLISM/14.html">Chloroplasts are green to yellow-green (accessory pigments, Table 11.2). Only oil has been identified as a storage product in large, pellicle-bearing Cells reaching 50 — 100 µm in size. Pyrenoids are absent. Trichocysts are located beneath The Cell surface (see also Dinophyta).

Only 10 species belonging to six genera are known in this class. With a single exception, they all inhabit fresh Water. Goniostomum and Vacuolaria can be found in bogs.
