Glycoproteins - Hughes R. 1985

Translator's Note

Interest in the Structure and function of Glycoproteins has grown significantly in recent years due to the established role of these macromolecules in various Membrane Functions. Specifically, glycoproteins have been shown to participate in the binding of various BIOREGULATORS on The Cell surface, in intercellular interactions, and in the transport and Circulation of macromolecules.

This book, offered to the reader's attention, outlines the latest advances in The Study of the structure, Biosynthesis, and biological function of glycoproteins. The author critically evaluates currently available data and provides a comprehensive Overview of Research Methods for this Class of compounds. When discussing the MAIN STAGES OF glycoprotein carbohydrate chain biosynthesis, A number of yet unresolved problems are outlined. These include The biosynthesis of complex oligosaccharide structures containing mannose residues, The formation of multiple N-glycan branch points, and The regulation of O-glycan biosynthesis. In examining glycoprotein functions, special attention is paid to The Role of carbohydrate structures in The transport of these compounds within the bloodstream and inside the cell. The mechanisms of intercellular interactions and adhesion are discussed in detail. Impairments in glycoprotein function associated with carcinogenesis are mentioned in the book merely among the problems awaiting resolution.

R. Hughes' book is a highly useful and comprehensive guide for specialists in biochemistry, molecular biology, bioorganic chemistry, and immunochemistry, as well as for graduate students in related fields. It can also serve as a valuable resource for upper-year undergraduate students in biology departments at universities and medical institutes. In the Soviet Union, the last monograph on this topic was the two-volume guide "Glycoproteins," published in Translation from English by Mir Publishers in 1969. This book will serve as a necessary and timely addition to the existing literature.
