Chapter 5. STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND FUNCTIONS OF PROTEINS
5.4. Protein Function
Each individual protein with a unique Primary Structure and conformation possesses a unique function that distinguishes it from other Proteins. A set of individual proteins performs A wide variety of complex Functions within The Cell.
A prerequisite for protein function is the binding of another substance, known as a Ligand, to the protein. Ligands can range from low-molecular-weight compounds to macromolecules. The interaction between a protein and a ligand is highly specific and is determined by The structure of a specific region of the polymer known as the ligand-binding site or Active Site.
