Photosynthetic Hydrogen Production
Benemann et al. used a system containing METABOLISM/14.html">Chloroplasts, ferredoxin, and Hydrogenase for the photosynthetic production of H2 [131], noting that such a process could serve as a prototype for a solar energy capture method. In another photochemical system for hydrogen synthesis, nitrogen-fixing heterocysts and photosynthetic vegetative Cells of the blue-green alga Anabaena cylindrica were used [132]. In this case, hydrogen evolution is driven by the Nitrogenase system [equation (14-5)].
The photochemical production of H2 by Bacteria is just one example of the diverse photometabolic processes found in photosynthetic organisms [132a]. Another such example is the light-driven uptake of acetate by purple bacteria, resulting in its conversion into poly-$eta$-hydroxybutyrate.
