Introduction

Until relatively recently, only a few Natural Peptides were known. With the development and refinement of new Research Methods, a multitude of various peptides have been discovered; some of them exhibit intense pharmacological and physiological effects and have therefore been thoroughly investigated. It is quite possible that there exists a whole range of peptides lacking such prominent biological activity. The peptides that have been isolated and characterized display A wide variety of activities. The potential involvement of peptides in Protein Synthesis will be discussed below (p. 281). This section discusses compounds whose molecules contain "typical" peptide bonds, namely bonds between $\alpha$-amino and $\alpha$-carboxyl groups, as well as compounds containing Other types of CO—NH bonds.
