The Thyroid Gland produces two iodoamino acid Hormones—3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) and 3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine (T4, thyroxine), which have long been known for their crucial role in regulating overall METABOLISM, development, and tissue differentiation. These hormones (their structures are shown in Fig. 46.1) regulate Gene Expression through a mechanism similar to that of Steroid Hormones.
