Methionine
Methionine as a methyl group donor was already discussed in Chapter 31. In the form of S-adenosylmethionine, it serves as the principal source of methyl groups in the body. Methyl groups can be utilized either directly or in an oxidized form. The methyl carbon can be incorporated into a single-carbon fragment, which conjugates with Glycine during Serine synthesis. In the form of S-adenosylmethionine, methionine acts as a precursor for the 1,3-diaminopropane moiety of Polyamines, spermine, and spermidine (see the “Ornithine” section below and Fig. 32.6).
