Serine

Most of the serine in Phosphoproteins occurs as O-phosphoserine.

Serine is involved in the synthesis of sphingosine (see Chapter 25).

It is also involved in the Synthesis of Purines and Pyrimidines. The ß-carbon serves as a source of the methyl groups of thymine (and Choline) as well as the carbon atoms at positions 2 and 8 of the purine ring (see Chapter 35).
